Cinque Terre

Our fourth stop, sort of the half way point, was at Vernazza of the Cinque Terre region. This is a charming little region of five towns (hence the Cinque Terre) all within about 6 miles of each other, all along the ocean. We really enjoyed this stay. It was a very welcome change of pace from the ambitious tourist go-go-go we had been doing, since the only thing to do in Cinque Terre is to relax. Our three days there went far too quickly.

This town was our favorite, can you see why?

This is the Street -- if you can call it that -- leading to our hotel.

Our hotel room came with access to this balcony setting. Ahh, relaxation at its finest! The ocean, the cliffs, the whole thing was just amazing.
We went to our little balcony every night.
Every Single Night. We bought a bottle of wine and enjoyed it up here every night. It would take a lot to make this get old!

We decided to hike the trail between the towns. It was our only actual plan for the entire three days we were there. It's a scenic hike that was not too strenuous, especially since Mike had the goal of drinking a glass of wine in each town. The first town is Riomaggiore, where we took a walk on the Via D'Amore, the pathway of love.

The Second Town is Manarola, a scenic and tiny town.

We took a short but breathtaking winery walk. Here is Mike in front of the wooden fences and rock retaining walls.

The third town was Corniglia, which I think must be Italian for many, many steps. Corniglia is high atop a hill, and we climbed 384 steps to get to the town itself.

It was a cute town, though, and so we'd do it again in a heartbeat!

It was a very enjoyable way to spend the day, hiking with scenery like this!

And the fourth town was Vernazza, our home.

We hadn't had enough stairs, so we decided to have dinner at a castle, at the top of a hill (you guessed, it stairs are the only way up!). It was possibly the most beautiful place we'd ever eaten. Gorgeous views and Mike swears we saw a real pirate boat. He looked at me deadpan and said "you might get raped!" Thank God, the pirates were nice ones and didn't siege the town.

The last day we went to Monterosso since we could not hike there (the trail was closed between our town and this one because of mud slides from the recent rains). We stumbled upon a lunch place with a knock out view and delicious wine and lunch.
